Bea's crack is healing well, it's grown half way down the foot with the help of the last crack sutures and patch. As you can see she has steel crack sutures in place; this stabilises the crack. These are placed within the hoof wall. Previously we used a crack patch however this time it has been left off to allow the crack to be kept cleaner, allow the foot to be monitored closer and be able to apply hoof oil To maintain hoof moisture. She has gone back to normal shoes instead of barshoes! Keep an eye out for more news of bea's case! ...

Suspensory Ligament Injury

"Charlie" had been at the vets due to having lameness in his left hind leg. Upon diagnosis, it was established that he had a small lesion on the lateral branch of his suspensory ligament at the fetlock along with mild inflammation of the proximal suspensory ligament on the same leg. Some handmade aluminium shoes were applied to stop the lateral aspect and toe of the left foot from sinking while still allowing the medial aspect to sink as normal. This case came in after "Bea" had an abscess form in the toe quarter area of her foot. The abscess burst out through the coronet band, this created a weakness in the hoof wall which became a complete sandcrack. All dirt and bacteria were removed from the crack to reduce the chance of reinfection, then a pair of handmade straightbar shoes were applied to give a full support and help the stability of the foot. A composite patch was also applied to aid in the stability of the foot and to reduce movement upon loading of the two sides of the crack. ...
